How Natural Methods Work To Lower Blood Sugar

By: Gen Wright Home | Health-and-Fitness

To know how blood sugar cures work, first it is necessary to understand what affects blood sugar levels and causes disorders such as diabetes.

Blood sugar levels are controlled by the beta cells in the islets of Langerhans, which are a part of the pancreas. The pancreas is a gland situated near the stomach in the human abdomen. Now these beta cells produce insulin, a hormone which is responsible for the metabolism of sugar.

Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels stay well above normal levels, after eating (post-prandial) or on an empty stomach in the morning. This may occur due to insulin resistance, or due to the beta cells being destroyed by the body. Whichever the case is, ultimately diabetes boils down to a lack of functioning insulin in the blood, leading to excessive blood sugar and a lack of energy as the sugar continues to stay as unutilized fuel.

To control diabetes, therefore, the top priorities are:

1.Make metabolism more efficient

2.Avoid excessive carbohydrates in the diet

A third priority is to strengthen the pancreas, but this usually happens in due course when enough steps are taken to regulate metabolism.

A diabetic diet should be low in carbohydrates, and rich in vitamins and minerals. Though a diabetic is ultimately not getting enough energy due to inefficient sugar metabolism, the answer is NOT to provide more and more carbohydrates and sugar-rich foods. However, diabetics will continue to crave foods that are unhealthy for them, as the starved body begs for sources of energy.

Cheating a diabetic's starch cravings, thankfully, is not too difficult. While white carbohydrates like white flour, white rice etc are full of empty calories, the brown versions of the same contain valuable micronutrients that are useful for the metabolic processes as well as for regeneration. So if a diabetic must eat starch, choose unpolished whole grains to give them maximum nutrition in the process. Whole wheat, for example, contains tangible amounts of fiber and protein, apart from micronutrients like selenium, calcium and iron.

Sugar cravings, however, are the bane that all diabetics must fight off through sheer willpower. Sugar cravings, unlike the gnawing hunger and starch craving, are mostly mental in nature - the forbidden fruit is always sweetest, this time literally.

Through meditation and regular exercise, this craving can be overcome, and the body's metabolism also gets a kick-start in the process. In fact, regular exercise helps to manage obesity levels and control stress, thus neutralizing two of the main triggers for diabetes in today's world.

Pharmaceutical treatment for diabetes includes pills, injections and insulin. Artificially introducing insulin was not the treatment of choice until recently, but it has become tragically popular now. What insulin injections do is to reduce the demand placed on the islets of Langerhans, which in turn reduce their supply to cope with the diminished demand. This leads to a vicious cycle of greater and greater insulin dependence - one that should be avoided for as long as possible.

Through sheer willpower, diet and exercise, diabetics can manage their condition for over a decade before requiring medication of any sort. So while life may never be the same, diabetes does not have to make you a medicine-dependent invalid unless you choose to be so.
