How Negative Calorie Foods Work - Basic Principle

By: Dr Andrew Napier Home | Health-and-Fitness | Weight-Loss

You have probably heard about negative calorie food by now and you can't stop wondering how negative calorie foods work because it sounds a little too good to be true. In fact, there's no gimmick, such foods really exist and help you burn fat faster. Why? Negative calorie food is harder to breakdown and to digest, so our bodies need some extra energy for doing this. Otherwise said, for processing these foods, our bodies use more calories than these foods are providing. This extra amount of energy is taken from the fat deposits in the body, so, in time, these will diminish.

All foods require some energy for being digested; only that some of them require more and these are the so called negative calorie foods. If you eat a meal that contains 500 calories, for instance, and your body only uses 250 for digesting it, it means that another 250 calories have to be burned some other way or they will be stored by the body. On the other hand, if you eat 200 calories and your body needs 250 for the digestion process, it means that the extra 50 calories need to be taken from somewhere else. This is where the fat deposits come in. The body will start breaking them down in order to obtain the energy that it still needs for completing the processing of these foods. After all, the working principle of negative calorie food is not at all complicated and it also makes perfect sense.

In order to promote a healthy weight loss you need to incorporate negative calorie foods in your daily diet. Although it might be a little difficult in the beginning, you will soon realize that you can make tasty and healthy dishes with such foods. Many fruits (apples, peaches, apricots, grapes, pears, strawberries, cranberries, lemons, oranges, watermelons) and vegetables (spinach, cucumber, broccoli, onion, celery and cabbage) require more calories than they contain.

There are also other foods, except fruits and vegetables that can be included in a list of negative calorie foods: lean beef, lean chicken and turkey, tuna, salmon and sardines, for example. Even when it comes to beverages, there are some that are recommended to be consumed. Green tea and coffee have a good effect on the fat deposits and prepare them for being used by the body, for being converted into energy. The caffeine they contain speeds up the metabolism, but also increases the heart rate, so be cautious with their consumption.
