How Parents Can Get Health Insurance For Their Children

By: Jordan FeRoss Home | Health-and-Fitness

It would seem that children spend more time in doctors' offices than any other group of people. Children tend to catch every virus and infection that passes around because they forget to wash their hands and often put them in their mouths. All these doctors' visits can get quite costly, especially if a child doesn't have health insurance in Texas. Fortunately, parents do have options that will allow them to get health insurance for the children in Texas even if they can't afford to pay for it.

There are multiple government programs that provide insurance to children if their families meet the eligibility guidelines. This option is most often available to families where the parents are unemployed or underemployed and for whom an employer-sponsored plan is not an option for health insurance in Texas.

One of the federal health insurance programs that are available is Medicaid. This health insurance is a federal and state program. It provides access to health care for children that can't get any other health insurance in Texas. This health insurance coverage is free, but you have to be eligible for it. There are plenty of benefits and they offer more than health insurance plans where you would have to pay.

Some of the requirements for persons to qualify for Medicaid health insurance in Texas include: being a resident of the state of Texas; a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident. When a child's parent is not a US citizen, but resides here legally, the child may still be qualified for Medicaid. The family's income, expenses and any medical problems are taken into consideration when qualifying them for Medicaid.

In the state, there is a government agency that handles eligibility requirements for children that need Medicaid health insurance in Texas. In some cases, depending on the situation, some families will automatically get assistance. In order to continue with eligibility, the families' finances are reviewed every six months.

There is also a health insurance program for children called CHIP. CHIP stands for Children's Health Insurance Program. It is also a federal and state health insurance program in Texas that is for those parents that make too much money for Medicaid. They also cannot pay for private health insurance coverage. Within the state of Texas, there are other insurance entities that offer this program. This insurance program has benefits that you would find in paid insurance plans.

CHIP's sliding-scale model means people pay for their medical services based on their household income to keep costs manageable. Parents may be responsible for nominal co-Similar to Medicaid, applicants go through the state agency for public health insurance in Texas and there are similar eligibility requirements with slightly higher income parameters. CHIP recipients undergo annual re-assessments to continue their coverage by the program. Children need and deserve adequate health insurance in Texas and no one should go without it because of an inability to pay for it when there are so many resources available to provide the needed assistance and make it possible to be insured.
