How Tankless Water Heaters Work

By: Jeffrey Chancellor Home | Business

Tankless hot water heaters are an energy efficient alternative to storage water heaters for use in residential or commercial buildings. Unlike traditional water heaters, tankless hot water heaters, powered by either natural gas or electricity, heat water throughout the home without storing the water in a tank. Instead, water travels through a pipe where it is then heated and delivered to various appliances in the home such as dishwashers, washing machines, hot tubs and showers.

Traditional water heaters use more water and energy over time. Water within a storage tank is constantly being heated whether water is being used in the home or not, resulting in higher energy bills. Since water is not stored in a tankless system, home owners and businesses can save money by reducing what is known as standby heating loss, which is the heat constantly circulating within a traditional water heater system. Also, according to the Department of Energy, homes that use 41 gallons of hot water or less daily are 24% †34% more efficient.

Here are some things to consider before buying and installing a tankless hot water heater for your home or business:

â€Installation is easier to complete during the building phase of a new home or office, although pre-existing buildings can be retrofitted.

â€Since they are smaller than regular water heaters, they can be fitted vertically or horizontally, thereby saving space.

â€Homes with multiple residents may want to install more than one system.

â€Tankless hot water heaters last longer. The average lifespan of the system is 20 years, compared to 10 to 15 years for a traditional storage water heater.

Although the initial installation fee is higher, the lack of a storage tank allows this system to operate at a lower energy cost over the life of the system.
