How To Choose A Dude Ranch For A Ranch Vacation

By: Christine Chou Home | Travel-and-Leisure | Vacation

If you want to take a break and go to a dude ranch, here are some tips for you. You want a ranch vacation that your family or friends will enjoy spending their time in. When making your ranch selection, you're going to have to select from so many varied types of dude ranches. Because of the options, making a choice could be daunting. Things become easier if you understand how one dude ranch program differs from the others. Also bear in mind your desires and needs, so that you can choose the best dude ranch package for you.

Where is the Dude Ranch Located?

The geographical location of the dude ranch is one of the main factors to consider. You need to consider how much it's going to take to get there. If you're driving, you need to consider the gas prices as well as the logistics of your trip. You also need to consider the weather in the dude ranch's location so you can prepare in advance. Look at the offerings in Montana or Colorado first as these are popular dude ranch destinations.

Dude Ranch Sleeping Quarters

A cabin is great if you're with family and friends. If you're going with a travel group, you may want to look at the more affordable accommodations. Whatever the case, you have to make sure your accommodations are ready before you go. Suitable accommodations planning is crucial for your vacation plans. Ask about maid service, and how much it will cost you. Some ranches offer free cleaning and maintenance services which can help a lot especially if you want to spend more time enjoying the outdoors than fixing your belongings. Not all ranches may offer free meals with your package so ask around before deciding.

What Activities are Offered

Activities in the ranch are what you signed up for. Common sense tells us you can only enjoy some activities during certain periods. If it's summer, however, there are a variety of things you can do like horseback riding, wilderness treks, fishing and many more. Depending on the ranch, you can also try rock climbing, golf course, tennis court, rodeo event, boating and other water sport activities, skiing, and snowshoeing. Some dude ranches also offer provisions for yoga groups and other unconventional activities.

Some activities are suitable for a certain number of people. If you're going with a big group, you might have to split up and schedule one activity separately. If your group is small, however, you might be asked to join a bigger group for a certain activity like horseback riding. These are small details you should pay attention to, as they can affect the price of the trip.

Children-friendly and pet-friendly provisions are always a plus. In fact, you should place this on top priority if you have children or pets coming with you. Find out what activities are meant for small children. Also, find out if there are accommodations that are available for kids needs like a nappy changing mat. Make sure you can choose which activities to join. If you choose a package with a set number of activities, you might want to exchange one activity if it's too strenuous or you don't want the extra risk (like extreme sports and the like). On that note, find out if there's a hospital nearby.

Prior preparation is needed for everyone to have a great time in a dude ranch. Get your family members involved in the planning process to make it easier for you to plan your vacation. You want to relax, have fun and enjoy the ranch environment, so it's important to choose the best ranch for your vacation.
