How To Choose An Essay Topic - 5 Great Tips

By: Gen Wright Home | Writing-and-Speaking

Some writers believe that they are encountering writer's block because they keep staring at a blank piece of paper and no ideas ever come to them. This may be true at times. However, some writers do not have writer's block. They simply do not know how to choose an essay topic. When prompted, you often find that ideas start to flow. Here are 5 great tips on how to choose an essay topic.

Tip 1: Choose a familiar topic.

Writing about something that you are familiar is much easier when compared to writing on a topic that you know nothing about. It is still possible to write on an unfamiliar topic. You just have to spend more time doing some research. That's fine if you have time on your hands. But if you are facing a tight deadline, always try to choose a topic that you are familiar with.

Tip 2: Choose a topic that you are passionate about.

You can also try to choose a topic that you are interested in. This may or may not be something that you are already familiar with. Choosing a topic that you are passionate about allows you to enjoy writing. The whole writing experience becomes more pleasant. You are also more motivated to complete the writing.

Tip 3: Choosing the right topic.

Choosing the right essay topic is like choosing the right song in a singing competition. The grade of your essay depends on what topic you choose. It's easy to set yourself up for failure if you choose the wrong topic. Have a talk with your lecturers or teachers to find out what are some of the better topics to write about.

Tip 4: Conduct brain storming sessions.

You can easily get a ton of great ideas from brain storming sessions. You can do this alone, or you can do this with classmates and friends. Talk things through with one another. Just let the conversation flow. You will be surprised at the ideas that are coming up. Write down all the ideas. You can always go back and choose the better ideas later on.

Tip 5: Research.

If all else fails, you can still rely on research. Go to the bookstore or the public library and pick up books that are related to the subject that you want to write about. Find out what others have been writing about. You can even consult senior students to learn more about the topics that they have chosen. This will give you a good idea of what topics to choose, and what not to choose.

Choosing an essay topic is easy, but it does require some work and effort. Combine some of the tips above and you will be find that the process becomes more smooth sailing.
