There are over 100,000 work related foot injuries in the United States every year. These types of injuries are all too common and in many cases are the result if improper footwear. Our feet take enough stress already just from normal daily activity it only makes sense that if we work in a hazardous job that we need to wear protective work boots or shoes. If you are in an industry such as construction or petrochemical plants where there are numerous hazards that can befall your feet it is even more crucial that you choose work boots with reinforced safety toes or steel toes. In many workplaces these are actually required footwear and are not optional. Many of these boots will also have steel on the underside in the soles so as to prevent injury due to punctures from things like exposed nails. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety so if you work in a hazardous environment you need to stay educated about the dangers that exist in your particular field of endeavor. One of the biggest causes of injury is from people not paying attention to proper safety procedures and taking shortcuts to save time or to make the task easier. It is essential to stay very alert when working in a dangerous environment and you need to use all of your natural senses to be able to ensure that you come home the same way that you left. You should also be considerate of those who work with you and around you and keep their safety in mind too. Take the time to inspect your equipment and be sure that it is working properly. Always be attentive to what is going on around you, don't be a casualty to inattention. Work at a safe, comfortable pace and keep the area in which you work clean of debris and organized. In order to prevent injuries to your feet it is a must to wear the best protective footwear available to you. Of course safety footwear cannot prevent every accident but it can definitely lessen the severity when they do occur. The problem is that three out of four people who are injured on the job weren't wearing any kind of safety footwear at all. The reasons given for not wearing safety boots include discomfort and lack of awareness that they really do help prevent injuries. I think that an injured foot is more uncomfortable than a steel toe boot. The newer safety footwear is not like the ugly, heavy boots of the past and many are now made with materials that make them nearly as lightweight as a tennis shoe. Regardless, the prevention of injury to your feet is an important matter that should not be neglected.
