How To Detect And Prevent Canine Distemper

By: Stan Cristian Home | Home-and-Family | Pets

Distemper is a fatal disease, affecting mostly young pups because of their weaker immune systems. If treated early, it can save your pet’s life; however, the problem is that most often than not, owners discover too late that their dog has distemper.

This is because the symptoms of this disease are quite similar to that of the common colds and other benign problems.

Signs of Canine Distemper

1. Presence of discharge from the eyes and nose that are yellow-green or dark green in color.
2. Tiredness for no reason and sneezing.
3. Twitching and shaking abnormally (tremors)

As you may have observed, it is often mistaken for allergies or colds because of the symptoms, particularly lethargy and sneezing. Just take note that the moment you see the green discharge, whether from the eyes or nose, you need to take your dog to the vet immediately.

The third symptom, which is twitching and shaking, is something that happens in the advanced stages of distemper. By this time, the probability of your dog getting cured is very low. The muscles have been damaged and the neurological system is compromised, and the most humane thing to do is to euthanize the pet. That is a very difficult move for a pet owner, but there really is nothing left for you to do. Your dog is already suffering, and you can help by doing something to ease his pain.

However, while this may be a late stage in distemper, tremors could also be a symptom of some other condition. Before anything else, have your dog checked for other diseases associated with tremors, to be certain.

Prevention

Distemper is hard to prevent because it can harm even healthy pets, particularly puppies. The best thing that you can do is to keep your pet healthy with good nutrition. Just as important, you need to make sure his vet sees him regularly and is given needed shots.

Be on the lookout for the symptoms of distemper, and be a responsible pet owner. Your role is very important and crucial for your pet’s health. His life may just depend on you.
