How To Do Water Damage Restoration In Your House's Garage

By: Chris Blastoyout Home |

While easier to deal with than a flooded basement, a flooded garage can also prove to be a difficult phase in the overall project of "Home Water Damage Restoration."

The very nature of a garage lends itself to making it the single most dangerous storing place in the house. Most materials of a hazardous nature with or without warning labels are actually found in the garage! Ranging anywhere from laundry bleach, engine oil, lighter fluids, charcoal, and rubber tires, a combination of any two of these objects can pose a real threat to the safety of the home. Flood damage to a garage not only poses a threat to the entire home, but it also threatens one of your more valuable possessions. Your car. Water damage restoration to a garage is the process of restoring the garage to its original, pre-loss condition, while restoring all the items stored inside the garage. (If they are worth saving at all.)

As is the case is with most water damage restoration procedures, make sure the circuit breaker is off before you venture in the garage to start the effort. You start by pumping out any water which may prohibit you from entering the garage. Once you've done that it is time to remove all the hazardous materials from the area.

Make a list of all the material you've stored in the garage then check what you find against it. If there is something missing then you need to do your best to locate it. Chances are the flood water swept it away and it now sits where it doesn't belong complicating someone else's water damage restoration effort. That's always a recipe for disaster.

Start by removing the most dangerous of toxic materials. Flammables are always high on the list of items that need to be removed. Place them safely outside the garage while you figure out whom to call for a safe pickup. Next, commence with the toxic material removal which include items such as bleach, fertilizers, and other household chemicals. Remember, if not removed, these can dissolve in the water and end up in yours or someone else's water supply.

Once you have cleared the garage of excess water and the hazardous materials, you can start the overall water damage restoration process. If you have appliances in the garage, chances are you need a certified electrician to do the final assessment and repair to these devices. If you have parked your car in the garage prior to the flood, then chances are that you have water in the engine, and possibly inside the cabin.

Don't panic. While the car is among your most valuable possessions, performing doing water damage restoration on your car is one of the easier tasks. A car is a mobile item and can be taken anywhere if needed (as long as it runs). The most important thing to remember is never to try and run the car until you make sure that engine is clear of any water. Roll the car out of the garage and open the hood to allow it to dry in the open air (provided it is not raining of course!). Once the car is dry, you can try to start and run it but again, making sure that there is no water in the gasoline tank first! Check the car battery and make sure it's has enough juice to start and run. If you're still having trouble it is now time to call in the experts.
You know what they say.. "Better safe than sorry."

All in all, water damage restoration to the garage is one of the easiest steps you will perform although, if not handled properly, the items in a garage stand to wreak havoc over your entire home.

Make it one of your first priorities to clear all hazardous material out of the garage before you start your garage water damage restoration.
