How To Dry A Water Damaged Home Without Hiring Water Removal Services

By: Richard Barthallo Home |

Water damage can happen even when we take great care to avoid such phenomenon. Causes of water damage are many - your fire sprinkler went off, toilet overflowed, pipe burst, drain backed up, there's flood in your area, your sink overflowed. If any of these unpleasant occurrences happen in your own home, you should understand that you have two options when it comes to water removal and water damage restoration in your home. You can do it yourself, or you can hire water damage restoration and water removal services.

If you opt not to call for professional water removal services, make sure you have the right equipment for removing water from your floor, walls, carpet, and other floorings. The basic equipments you need for water removal and drying include wet/dry vacuum cleaner, dehumidifier, water extractors, fans, and movers.

If you don't have any or lack any of these equipment, you can still dry your home without having to hire water removal services. A cheaper alternative to hiring water removal services would be to rent water removal and drying equipment from service centers or specific rental stores. Check out yellow pages for listings of water removal equipment rental services. You can also browse online for web-based shops renting out water removal and drying equipment.

Before using water removal equipment, make sure you have read the corresponding user's guides and know how to use them. Since you'd risk electrocution if electricity is running inside a water-saturated home, you can use generator or electricity from an outside source.

The objective of water removal is to prevent water from damaging your property any further. Moisture inside homes also encourages growth of molds and mildew. You should, therefore, remove water from your home as promptly as you can. When drying your home, you should also work quickly albeit thoroughly.

Before you do water removal, open all windows and doors. This is to allow fresh air to enter and ventilate your home. Well-ventilated homes discourage growth of molds and mildew. Fresh air can also help dry the insides of your home faster.

If there's standing water in your room, drain it with a sump pump. You can also use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to remove water. Never use an ordinary vacuum cleaner for this purpose! You'd risk electrocution and ruining your vacuum cleaner.

Sometimes, you also need to extract water from your carpet. Again, you need a wet/dry vacuum to achieve this. You also need to extract water from your walls and wooden furniture. To remove moisture from walls, use a dehumidifier. To facilitate thorough air circulation, use fan and air movers.

Restoring water damaged to its pre-loss state need not be expensive. Again, if your home has been damaged by water, there's no need to call water removal services as long as you are able and willing to do the work yourself. Of course, water removal services offer a more convenient alternative to drying your home. However, cost of water removal services often run up to several thousands of dollars.

So if you want to save on cost of professional services, just bring out your water removal tools and start extracting water from your home.
