How To Easily Learn Saxophone

By: Pamelina Siow Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

Reggae and jazz music enthusiasts find saxophones the ultimate musical instrument. Many online stores offer cheap saxophones to consumers but take care that you are not compromising the quality of your instrument.

Buying one is important so that you can practice anytime you want. Be sure to purchase some needed accessories too, such as cork grease, neck strap, a stand, swab, and a firm case to protect your saxophone.

There may be a proliferation of instructional DVD's in music stores these days, but professionals still advice beginners to hire music teachers instead. This is to avoid having bad habits when playing. You can start studying the basics of playing the saxophone even while you are still looking for the right sax teacher.

Getting Started In learning Saxophone

Before blowing the instrument, it is better to have an understanding about its parts and the functions of each so you can have a better foundation on how to create a sound.

The sax comprises of two parts - the neck and body. The neck of the sax is usually detachable from the body, except for soprano saxophones. It is where the mouthpiece is located. The body is shaped like a conical tube. On it you will find the keys, the rods, the pads and many other vital parts of the instrument.

The rod is very important during a performance, because it supports all your movements when playing. Like everything else, the rod should be well-maintained especially during extended performance. The pads, meanwhile, are the main part of the saxophone that produces sound. Always check the pads and make sure these completely cover the holes.

The most common type of saxophone for beginners is the alto. Its shape and size make for easier handling, so it is recommended by the teachers to their students. Standard repertoires available for alto include such greats as Debussy, Ibert and Glazunov.

Available in straight and curved shapes, the soprano is considered to be the most difficult type to use. You most often see it played in contemporary performances.

The last most commonly used sax is the jazz saxophone, also known as tenor. This is also good for beginners to handle. It is quite bigger than the alto, and comes with a little curve on the neck portion.

Playing the Saxophone

Knowing the basic notes is very important when you are starting to learn saxophone. Actually, you can only perfect this with the help of a music instructor. You will not find it hard to find DVD tutorials, but when it comes to learning a musical instrument, the guidance of a live teacher is still invaluable.

You need to familiarize the keys of the instrument to know the proper finger placement. After learning the basic lessons, you will move further to more complex lessons such as changing and pulling off notes.

Most sax players make us think that it is easy to play, when in fact, it is rather difficult. Having an interest in reggae, jazz and classical music will make you more familiar with the tune and melody. As a result, it will be easier for you to learn and play the sax.

The best requirement to quickly learn saxophone is to possess an interest and willingness to learn. These qualities will surely take you to more complex repertoires and pieces as you continue to expand your knowledge and skills.
