How To Find A Good Credit Card Deal

By: Paul McDermott Home | Finance | Credit

What is a good credit card deal? You must have heard people say - 'I got a good credit card deal'. So if you happen to be looking for a credit card at that moment, do you just go with what your friend has told you as a good credit card deal?

As you might expect, a good deal for your friend may not mean it works for you. Here is why. There are so many different cards available now that give rewards for various activities that make most such cards attractive to a focused group of people. If your friend is a scuba diver and has a scuba diving card, but you are afraid of the water and want to stay home and work in your garden, then of course her good credit card deal is not going to be good for you.

As you can see, lifestyle differences can mean that the credit card your friend likes will do you no good, and the associated fees would be a waste of money for you.

Since it is your friend who told about her good deal, it is possible that it would work for you, since you presumably have some of the same hobbies.

Travel and airline cards often give rewards, although they often have fairly high annual fees, and sometimes restrictions on redeeming the rewards that make them inconvenient for what you will pay. I am finding the cost of having one of these cards keeps going up, so make sure you will really benefit from the rewards you can earn.

For people shopping at a particular retail store or a shop, a good credit card deal would be a card that offers discounts, rebates and rewards on shopping. Again, the retail stores themselves might have credit cards on offer that could be beneficial to you. Then there are credit card deals that are linked to gasoline stores or big grocery chains.

For most people, a basic credit card may be the best. You could still get rewards for purchases. But remember, credit card companies are smart and out to make money. So they know the typical spending habits of a card holder, and structure their deal to make themselves a profit.

So when you hear someone excitedly telling you about the good credit card deal she got, remember the odd hobbies she has and tell yourself it probably would not be good for you. And never add a new card just because some new deal came along. Think clearly about managing your spending and debt, and while your friend is working overtime to make her credit card payment, you will be leaving early to enjoy a nice long weekend.
