How to Get a Record Deal
By: Ty Cohen

It's a fact that hundreds of demos of videos and recordings are sent to every record company every single day! I don't say this to discourage you, I only want to encourage you. Knowing this will help you realize just how crucial it is to set yourself apart from the others looking to get a record deal.

Over the next few minutes, I am going to explain to you just how to get a record deal. First and foremost, you need to get noticed by a record label. Aside from sending in demos, you need to perform in live venues. Do some research and look for places around your area and beyond that frequently have A&R people, TV & radio personnel or big promoters attending.

Put together a publicity pack before performing in shows or sending demos to a record company. You of course need a video and/or soundtrack, pictures, posters, cds, a bio page and most importantly some business cards. Even if you are on a budget, you need to make your publicity pack look as professional as possible.

Most budding artists are on a budget but that's ok. One free setting you may consider using is none other than MySpace Music. This is the wave of the future for musicians trying to get their music out there! You can post your songs, invite people to listen, keep up with your fans and promote, promote, promote. It can also be a reference page for anyone that wants to get a quick taste of your music and style.

The process of getting a record deal is not an easy task for everyday people. It will take time, research and a lot of promoting yourself or your band. Consider getting a manager to help organize your schedule, do PR and negotiate offers.

Finally, you need to set yourself apart from other bands with your style. Create a look for your band that will stand out from all others in your genre. You need to look the part and make an original and lasting impression on those that see you perform.

There are so many tactics involved in exploring how to get a record deal. Make sure you explore every one of them. Start by building a fan base in your home town and build it up from there. Keep in mind that some of your most loyal fans will come from your home town. Remember, originality is the key to getting a record deal. So find your niche and go with it.
