Spiders. The little creatures that horror films love to demonize. But what can you do if you've got a fear of spiders? How can you stop yourself quaking at the very idea of an encounter with a spider? Chances are that you haven't always been afraid of spiders. As a child, you were probably quite content letting spiders and other creepy crawlies wander all around you. Then you suddenly learned (maybe when your mother screamed) that these tiny creatures were something to be afraid of. And occasionally that's true - usually when the spider concerned is poisonous. But most spiders you're likely to encounter are harmless. "All" you need to do is train your mind to accept this. If your fear is deep rooted and you can't even face the word "spider" then you'll need more help than this article can give. But if you're not at that paranoid stage then here are some simple tricks you can get your mind to perform that will reduce or eliminate your fear of spiders: Close your eyes and dress the spider up in stripy colored wellington boots. Imagine each of its eight legs is wearing a different rainbow colored boot. Once you've done this, see your spider up on a stage, lit up by a floodlight and tap dancing in its boots. Next up, see your spider (in a cage to protect you if necessary) but this time imagine that it's had a graffiti attack like the New York subway trains you see in movies. A spider with neon green graffiti daubed all over it somehow isn't the same scary creature that it was a few minutes before. Appeal to your rational mind. How can a small creature that is preoccupied with catching flies scare something that's 30 times its height (you!)? You know that you could swat the poor spider and kill it with a single blow. It also knows that. Which gives you the upper hand. It's far kinder to move the spider outside - I find a sheet of paper is good for this - and move it out of range. Then you'll both be happier! If none of those work. it's time to see a specialist. Check your local Yellow Pages for a hypnotist - they should be able to cure your fear of spiders quickly - or treat yourself to a hypnosis track. Rest assured that you can cure your fear of spiders quickly and easily if you want to.
