How To Have An Exiting Getaway Without Leaving Town

By: John Morris Home | Travel-and-Leisure

There are more remedies for the business of life than an expensive two week vacation. Your hometown is full of amazing sights and sounds that you, with a bit of creativity and know-how, can turn into the perfect getaway.

1. Jungle Expedition

There are many parts of your hometown that are designated as parks. Many of these areas offer trails in good condition for walking or hiking. The animals you see during the day will be different from those at night. If you go at night, be sure to watch a scary movie beforehand but remember to bring along a flashlight. If you are going on a longer hike, be sure to tell someone where you're going, and what time you're planning to be back. That way, if something happens to you or if you get lost, you'll have people out looking for you pretty quickly. It's better to be safe, than sorry.

2. Fishing Trip

First, a word of warning. Be sure to contact your local wildlife and game department for fishing reports pertaining to your area first. In some cases it is illegal to fish above a certain number of fish, but you can get around this using the catch and release method if you are not going to eat the fish but only catch them for sport. If you are fortunate enough to live close to the ocean, you will be able to enjoy a leisurely fishing trip at the local pier, followed by a relaxing dinner.

3. Camping

The entire family can enjoy a weekend at a local campground. This may even be the perfect time to take out the RV for one last time before summer is over. Best of all, you can do this without any of the stress of a long distance trip. Your destination is right there. It's a good idea to plan a few days away, that way you'll really get to leave all the stresses and chores at home. And leave that laptop at home! Plan to relax and unwind.

4. Dining Out

There are probably lots of restaurants that you have thought of going to, but never did. Now is your chance! Also, don't worry about the costs - if you budget wisely, price is never an issue. You should budget for a local getaway in the same way that you do for a full blown travel getaway. Except the best part is, the travel expenses are non-existent, so you have more to spend on food and entertainment.
