By: Robinson Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

Cerebral palsy is certainly concerning to most parents since this condition also comes with developmental delays aside from various problems resulting from cerebral palsy. But what parents need to know is that this is not all that uncommon and the truth is that this can be improved. A child with cerebral palsy may not be able to meet the milestones in accordance to his or her chronological age and this has been further supported the American †Speech †Language †Hearing Association or ASHA mainly dealing in clinical issues associated with speech language pathology. Aside from those diagnosed with cerebral palsy, it is also common for preterm babies to have as much as one or a couple of years in order for them to catch up, although it may be a different case among children with cerebral palsy.
Developmental delays for children with cerebral palsy can cause a number of early impediments for them and among these developmental delays include speech, language recognition, and physical functions. Sometimes, a child with cerebral palsy may be emotionally and or physically younger than his or her actual chronological age. Because of this, he or she may develop skills such as speech or physical functions much later than other children of his or her age.
Improving Developmental Delays in Children With CP
The best method for improving developmental delays particularly in the speech aspect is by continuously monitoring the child in order to catch the problem as early as possible and then begin resolving the problem right away. More often than not, a speech language pathologist will assess the child with cerebral palsy based on his or her adjusted age until age two. The truth is that even before a child starts speaking, you can easily look for telltale signs that can tell you that speech will become a challenge later on. This approach is also effective in detecting and resolving developmental delays on physical movement. If the child fails to reach his or her personal milestones at a specific age, there is a good chance that the cerebral palsy may be causing these developmental delays.
If a child seems to be having great difficulty using gestures and eye gaze to indicate what he or she wants, he or she may also be in trouble for developmental delays in speech, language, and physical functions. Other telltale signs also include the child’s failure to understand what you are saying or his lack of capability to use ordinary objects. It is best to consult a professional with expertise in dealing with cerebral palsy in order for the child to be able to get special that can help him cope with his developmental delays.
Cerebral palsy is not a progressive condition, although there are no known treatments that can cure CP. But there are ways wherein a child can achieve a sense of normalcy in his or her life by resolving various issues that come along with CP like developmental delays as early as possible.
