If your internet connection suddenly slows down there are several variables that may be the problem. You'll need to investigate several things before concluding that you have a problem with hardware or that your service provider is short-ending you. A bit of troubleshooting is needed to put your finger on your speed problem. Bandwidth is the amount of internet connection speed you bought from your service provider. It is usually measured by download and upload speed. If people or applications are draining your bandwidth this will mean a slower connection for you. Imagine a parking lot filled with cars. The less cars in the lot, the faster it is to find a spot. The more cars in the lot, the longer it takes. The same is true of your internet connection. Take a look at any computer running on the same network in your home. Is anyone downloading heavy music files or watching movies online? Is anyhone downloading large files? Many types of kids computer games are installed onto your hard drive but some games are played on the internet against other players in far off places. These types of games drain your bandwidth. There are also other programs and utilities that use bandwidth. Listening to online music or watching online videos are such examples. If you can't find any of the aforementioned going on on your network, look beyond. Is your router secured? If it isn't anyone and their dog can connect to the internet through your router and make a significant dent in your bandwidth not to mention the security risk of leaving your router and thus your computer unprotected. To be sure, outsiders connecting through your router may be oblivious. If their wireless is set up to automatically detect the closest connection in range, they may not even be paying attention to their connection at all. To secure your router you need to log into your router's setting page through a web browser. Your router's instruction manual will tell you what IP to enter in your web browser in order to get to this page. Lastly, you may have viruses, spyware or adware on your computer. These malicious programs will not only significantly slow down your internet speed but will also slow down your computer. It is highly recommended to run your anti-spyware software regularly and to make sure you update regularly as well. If your software is not up-to-date it can not protect you against the latest threats and will leave you vulnerable to malicious applications that eat up your system's resources and bandwidth.
