How To Keep Your Home Energy Efficient

By: Dirik Hameed Home | Home-and-Family

If you believe increasing the efficiency of your home is important, there are a number of steps you can take to make positive changes. If your home is already efficient and you want to ensure things stay that way, you will have to make an effort to keep things running well. Changes can include small items that will make a big difference over time, as well as major changes that are a big investment initially and offer significant changes as soon as you install them. Geothermal systems will give you an energy-efficient edge that improves your energy bills and the efficiency of energy use in your home. You can also opt for a furnace tune up. This may seem like a small tip, but if your heating unit is running efficiently, you will save a great deal of money over time.

In addition to this appliance, you should have all of your appliances serviced on a regular schedule. Keep items like washers and dryers clean and free of buildup and debris so they can run as efficiently as possible. You should also consider having items serviced like your refrigerator and your water heater to make sure they are using as little energy as possible when in operation. Smaller appliances like the microwave can be unplugged when not in use.

Creating a weather tight home is one of the best ways to improve the energy efficiency of a home. You can have the most efficient heating methods on the market, but if all the heat is escaping through drafty windows, it will do you no good. Likewise, as cold air seeps into your home, it will have a negative impact on what you are doing to heat your home. Also remember that in addition to preventing warm air from escaping, windows can also help to heat your home. In the summer, utilize the sunshine that streams into rooms through the windows. You can shut off heating vents to rooms that get a tremendous amount of warming sunshine. In the summer, do the opposite and close off the air conditioning vents to shaded rooms that have a tendency to stay cool in the dark.

Make sure your entire family is in on the energy upgrade plans. If you believe energy is being conserved, but a family member is causing a secret energy drain, the impact of your changes may be less noticeable. Be sure family members turn off lights when they leave rooms and that they do not leave things running when they are not in use.

Finally, consider a professional energy evaluation. Your energy company can do an audit of your home and determine where you can conserve more energy and save money. While you may have to pay a small fee for the audit, it will save you a great deal of money in the long run. Some energy companies do the audits for free, so be sure you ask for the service if it is available free of charge. Any savings earned from a free audit is found money.
