Good To Great has been a best seller for multiple years now. It is a very popular business book, selling over 2 million copies. The book compares some of the "Great" Companies (based on criteria specified in the book) with companies that are just "Good". It then researches those companies thoroughly, conducting interviews and researching statistics, in order to find out what these companies do differently than their comparison companies. It took over 5 years to complete the research, with 20 people doing research! Here are some of the principles that you can use for your small business. - Start at the Top If you want to make the company great, start at the top, with yourself. Make yourself a great leader. Jim Collins (the author) discovered from doing research that the companies that were "Great" all had leaders that had the following qualities: a) Humility b) Will Power c) Extreme Care for Company - First Who, then What Hire great employees. Make sure that all of your employees will be loyal, hard working, honest employees. Don't let nepotism, or sympathy, make you hire employees that are going to be bad employees. - Discover What is important Find out what your company cares about. In other words what are your reasons for existence besides profits? What makes your company bennefical to the world? What service does your company provide in exchange for the money it recieves? Once you find out what these are, try to develop them so that you and your employees are enthusiastic about work, and will know that they are changing the world in a positive way. - Be the Best (at something) You must make your company better than every other company in the same industry, in some way. You could offer the lowest price, the best quality, the best service, etc. If you can't be the best in one of these aspects, you're probably selling the wrong product or service. Find out what your company can be the best in, and work almost entirely on that. If you want to make your company great, you will need to make sure that you are a good owner and boss. You will have to make sure that your employees are hones, loyal, and hard working employees. You will have to make sure that your company is enthusiastic about going to work, because they know that they are making a difference in the world. And finally you will need to become the best at something. If you can do this, you should be able to create a strong, long lasting company.
