How To Obtain Wound Care Certification

By: Art Gib Home | Business | Careers-Employment

If you are a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree and you want to expand your credentials to WCC following your name, obtaining your wound care certification is essential in making your career expand and grow.

Wound care falls under the WOCNCB which is the wound, ostomy, continence, nursing certification board, and allows nurses to certify and specialize in taking care of patients with ostomy bags, wound incisions, continence issues and also foot care. This is a specialty certification and is in high demand in home care as well as many hospitals around the world.

Typically the credits are only valid for five years after obtaining certification and at that time, a RN will have to pay a recertification fee or sometimes retest in order to continue to be certified.

There are several steps that need to take place in order to obtain wound care certification but there are requirements you must have before you can begin your training. You must initially be a registered nurse and have obtained your degree from an accreted nursing school. You must also have a valid nursing license that has been issued in the state in which you work and practice.

If you can answer the question honesty that you would enjoy working with clients who have suffered from burns, have weeping and deep wounds and unhealed incisions, obtaining a wound care certification may be a good option and field to specialize in.

If you currently are a pediatric nurse or you work with children in a burn unit or trauma unit, obtaining your wound care certification is essential in being able to expand your job duties and gain a better understanding of the environment around you as well as be able to handle special cases that involve extreme wound care issues that need special attention.

Generally, in order to also be considered for wound care certification you will have to have had itleast three years of experience with clinical wound care experience before you can apply to take the exam.

To obtain your wound care certification you will need to check first with your states rules and regulations, but typically you will receive a packet containing a handbook that will aid in preparing you to take your exam. Read the packet thoroughly before you schedule to take the exam as you will have to repay the full amount in order to retake the exam if you miss it or you fail. Proceed to take the exam.

After three months you should receive notification if you have passed or failed your test, if you passed the test you will then receive the exact information needed for the board to issue you proper identification as well as your certificate of completion.
