How To Play The Flute

By: Pamelina Siow Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

Flute seems like a hard instrument to learn. It isn't the case though, because flutes are actually one of the easiest instruments to study for a beginner. Of course, the student has an advantage if he has the air capacity of a swimmer or singer.

Flutes require you to blow air into it, and when you stop, so do the sounds. If you are serious about learning the flute, then the following tips will help you master the basics.

First of all, purchase a flute. This will determine if you really like the instrument enough to learn it. If you're not excited about it, maybe this isn't for you. The beginners are usually advised to get the closed-hole flute to start with.

There are actually three parts of the regular flute: the head joint, foot joint, and the embouchure. Before you assemble the whole flute, you can practice blowing first in the head joint. Place the lip plate a little below your lower lip, pucker those lips, inhale deeply then blow into the hole. Don't worry if sound doesn't come out the first time. It takes time, so you have to practice with this first step.

Next, you have to know how to hold the flute properly. With the flute correctly placed in your mouth, the rest of the flute should be on your right side. Your right hand is farther from the mouthpiece, and it should be faced away from you. Your left, on the other hand, is faced towards you.

A flute player must observe proper posture to ensure better air blowing capacities. You can sit down or stand up, but either way, the flute should be held a little below parallel.

Remember that holding a flute takes its toll on your hands. Your hands should be relaxed, but even with that, it would still get sore. Plus, your head should be slightly lifted up. That way, air can go out properly through the air channel.

When you want to know how to learn the flute, you have to memorize the fingering of each note.

You can buy a chart that has the complete fingering and practice a lot. After familiarizing yourself with the notes, you have to warm up every time you use the flute. This will make it easier for you to play music sheets. Also, this will let you know whether your instrument is in tune.

Playing flute makes it inevitable that it will be full of spit afterwards. That's why you have to clean it thoroughly and constantly. You can also polish it using a clean cloth.

What you learned here are just the basics. If you can handle the more advanced lessons by yourself, then so much the better. Getting your own Singapore flute instructor is another good idea.

The Singapore Flute teacher can teach you the proper way of learning the flute. If he notices any bad habits that you have, you are sure to receive a reprimand. That's something you can't learn by yourself.
