How To Read Your Puppy’s Body Language

By: Moses Peter Home | Home-and-Family | Pets

Dogs have many different ways of communicating with us, even though they cannot talk. Their body language is one of the main ways they tell us how they’re feeling and what’s going on inside of their head. But can you recognize them correctly?

There are many different things your English Bulldog puppy, for example, can do to communicate with you. Many of those signs lie in his different facial expressions. The majority of the time, your English Bulldog puppy probably wears a face that says â€I am happy, happy, happy†with his eyes normal sized, his mouth relaxed or even open with a slow rhythmic pant, his ears in their natural position and his tail relaxed. All of this shows everything is right in his little world and there is no immediate threat or anything to stress him out.

However, dogs that are possessive of their toys, bones or food or tend to guard their food and treats from other animals in the house will have a completely different look to them. Smaller breeds such as Yorkshire Terrier puppies tend to be possessive when they are in a family with other, bigger dogs. You may have seen your Yorkie puppy giving other dogs in the family quick glances from the very corner of his eye, showing most of the whites in his eyes. He may even curl his lip to show his front teeth, hunch his back of his item and let out a low growl. This is a sure warning sign †back up or you’re going to lose a paw. Some dogs that exert this behavior would never start a fight but they must stand up for themselves to protect their â€killâ€.

Then there are the signs of the natural hunter in your puppy. You may see these signs more predominantly in Puggle puppies because of the Beagle heritage. When there is a strange noise or smell, you may see your Puggle puppy standing firmly still with his tail erect, maybe even curled up to touch his back, his ears up and turned in the direction of whatever is alerting him, his mouth shut tight and his wide focused and wide. He may even puff up the fur on his withers to appear larger than he is. This is his natural reaction to a threat and must stay alert while deciding if he is in danger or has a chance at catching food.

There are many different reasons for your puppy’s eyes to be wide, for example, so you must pay attention to everything that is going on with his body to appropriately decide what he’s thinking and what his next move may be. Knowing these signs can give you the upper hand and allow you to avoid a situation before it happens!
