Acne treatment is more than just curing pimples and spots. It includes getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads as well. Blackheads are a type of acne vulgaris and are also known as open comedones. It is mainly caused by excess sebum that clogged the pores. When excess oils accumulate on the pores and become toxic, it subsequently is exposed to oxidization and becomes a blackhead. Blackheads can become difficult to remove and ugly if they are left too long and untreated. People with oily skin are most susceptible to having blackheads. Whiteheads, on the other hand, is not as obvious as blackheads. It is also a symptom of acne vulgaris. Whiteheads are primarily caused by pores clogged with excess oils and dead skin cells. Most people will try to get rid of blackheads and whiteheads by squeezing with their fingers. This is not advisable because it can lead to scarring and infection. You have to be aware that treatments for blackheads and whiteheads will take some time. However, there are products that can help to speed up the process and at the same time, prevent scarring. Salicylic Acid - helps in removing excess oils and bacteria on the skin. It is a proven agent for blackhead removal. Alpha Hydroxyl Acids - can be used to remove dead skin cells and get rid of whiteheads. Benzoyl Peroxide - not as effective as the above for removing blackheads but it is used commonly for treating pimples. Accutane - this is used only if you have very severe cystic acne. If possible, try other methods and keep this as a last resort. Home cures - you can try using a face steamer and add some essential oils like lavender, neroli or tea tree. This can help in removing whiteheads on the pores. Lemon juice can be used as a toner to help reduce excess oil on the skin. There are also the popular pore strips that will help remove dirt and blackheads on areas like the nose, forehead and chin. This coupled with the use of salicylic acid have been one of the most effective ways to remove blackheads. Keep in mind not to overuse on the pore strips. It is best to use salicylic acid first and wait till the blackheads are "loosen" before applying the strips.
