Social networks have a huge following these days, so it makes sense to use them to your advantage. Social media marketing, or SMM, is a relatively new tactic to market your business but it can be incredibly successful, largely thanks to the huge audience that you can target. There are plenty of ways to use it to your benefit, and here are just a few of them. First up, remember that if you want to have a successful and beneficial SMM campaign you need to have a strong social network. This doesn’t just mean having thousands of followers, friends or fans †you need to take it one step further. You need to make sure that your followers are legit if you want to be successful, and you also need to regularly interact with them. Interaction is the only way to ensure that your message is successfully transmitted, as if you’ve got your followers there but don’t interact with them or keep them updated you’re wasting valuable marketing potential. This leads us onto another related point †keep content regularly updated. Not many people become followers or fans of inactive profiles, so if you want to increase your visibility you need to keep it fresh. Equally, people won’t be interested in profiles that don’t contain any useful information, so if you want to appeal to your target market keep your posts and blogs current, relevant and full of informative stuff. Yes, I said blogs, and yes, you will need them. No one can be successful at SMM without at least one blog under their belt, making them an integral part of all social media campaigns. Without blogs there’ll be no content for followers to read, nothing to Digg or Stumble, and all in all a wholly uninteresting social arena. Blogs always need to be integrated into your site, or you could even have a separate one that links back, and make sure to follow the above tip †keep it regularly updated with new posts. As well as your own pages, it’s also important to immerse yourself into other people’s social networks. Comment on blog posts, create a discussion, post interesting links (as long as you’re not spamming every related site with your own links †this will have the opposite effect), in fact do anything that will get you recognised to the social media world. This will lead to increased visibility for your own site, and that can only be a good thing. But, remember to adhere to best-practices of each site, as each community will have their own rules/jargon/culture, and if you say or do the wrong thing you can quickly be blacklisted. So, social media marketing can easily be used to your advantage. These are just a few things you might like to try and there are many more besides, and all of them can lead to great success. Remember to start off slowly, and if you’re new to SMM don’t expect instant results. It takes a while to cultivate a successful social network but the results can be incredibly rewarding, so never underestimate just how beneficial SMM can be to your business.
