Howard University: The Federally Chartered University In Washington D.c

A federally chartered university, Howard University is located in Washington D.C in United States. Basically it is an African American university supported by federal finance.

Brief Background

Though the university was established way back in the later part of 19th century and chartered by the American Congress in 1867, its real expansion started in from the year 1918 onwards and rapid progress was made by the University since 1975. Most prominent among the African American academies in United States, it receives financial support from the U.S Government though the University is privately controlled. Founded with special obligation to teach the African American students in 1867, it also contains an African American history oriented library.

Unique Features

Historically black university, Howard is non-profit, coeducation and non sectarian private University. High research activities characterize the University that is also member school of Thurgood Marshal Scholarship Fund. One of the important aspects of the university is that it offers substantial scope for the students for achievement of excellence in professional and technical and learning careers.

Academic Streams

Howard University has various academic streams in its wing that includes law, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry as well as divinity besides the undergraduate programs.

Campus Features

Howard has a campus of around 256 acres in Northwest Washington. Most of the campus developments took place after the World War I since 1918. An important feature of the campus is abundance of historic landmarks that includes Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, Founders Library, as well as Fredric Douglass Memorial Hall. Students can live in one of the ten dormitories in the campus. Incidentally the dormitories for graduate and undergraduate students are different.

Multiple academic streams are offered by Howard University that includes courses for undergraduate and graduate students, international and other students. University offers under graduation, graduation, and post graduation, doctoral and post doctoral programs for aspirant students.

Financial Aids

Most of the financial aids provided by the University are merit based such as the research and teaching assistantship for graduates, fellowships for graduates as well as tuition scholarships for students. Normal Federal, state, institutional, and other financial aids are also available for the students. Aspirant students should take care for submission of applications in time. Selection process is completed between February and June every year.
