Hungarian Vizsla â€yogi’ Wins Best In Show At Crufts.

By: Chrisgyleo Home | Home-and-Family | Pets

A seven-year-old Hungarian Vizla dog called Yogi, has beaten off competition to win Best in Show at the Crufts 2010 show held at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Yogi is the first Hungarian Vizsla to win Best in Show. His handler, John Thirlwell said his "wonderful dog" from Carlisle, Cumbria, is likely to retire.

The crowning of the Best in Show winner was preceded by the presentation of the Kennel Club’s Friends for Life award, which recognises the country’s dog heroes. The award went to Sam Daly and his assistance dog Josie the Labrador Retriever from Eton, Berkshire.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director, said: â€We give our congratulations to Naomi, Kathryn and Yogi who has taken the prestigious Best in Show Award. â€DFS Crufts is a celebration of healthy, happy dogs which recognises the special and unique bond between dogs and their owners.

Yogi, who had previously modelled for the Waggers online dog store, was one of nearly 22,000 dogs across 187 breeds were entered into this year's Best in Show competition. Judge Valerie Foss said of the winning dog: "He is such a lovely mover, so powerful, so free. "He is just a very, very good dog."

Thousands had packed the arena to cheer on the finalists when they were treated to an â€unusual event’, when earlier, judging of the Gundog category (which Yogi won) was interrupted by a streaker! Obviously not as well groomed as the dogs on show, the streaker was shown a quick exit.

The world's biggest dog show is hosted in the vast spaces of Birmingham's NEC and as always at Crufts; there are dogs of all breeds on display, as well as police dog demonstrations, veterinary advice and dog grooming guidance. The event though is as much a trade show as a dog show.

For dog devotees, there's nothing to stop you wearing a T-shirt ("The more people I meet, the more I like my dog"), while supping from a Chihuahua mug, slumped against a Rhodesian ridgeback-embroidered cushion. Whatever you want for your pet, whether it is dog beds, dog blankets or other dog accessories, they are all on sale in the arena.

If you love dogs, but can't decide between a Labrador or a Lhaso Apso then the Discover Dogs area is the place to be. Discover Dogs will host over 200 breeds of pedigree dog for you to meet and you can talk to their knowledgeable owners and breeders. You will also be able to gain first hand advice on dog grooming, training and whether the breed is right for you. You can be sure it will lead you to your perfect companion!

Who knows, maybe next year you and your pet dog will be a winner at Crufts.
