Ideas For Apartment Security

By: Stewart Wrighter Home | Home-and-Family

Renting your home instead of owning has a number of advantages. It can often be less expensive and there are a number of responsibilities you do not have since you do not own the space. However, there are some things you sacrifice when renting and you need to find ways to compensate. For instance, renters might have less space and need to put their belongings in storage. They might have to share common areas or deal with noise from other nearby residents. They might also lack the security private homes have. Luckily, there are solutions for many of these problems. If you live in apartment rentals, there are plenty of ways you can beef up your personal security.

Start by examining your behavior. Do you use common sense in regard to personal security? If you live alone, you should avoid coming home after dark by yourself as much as possible. On the occasions you have no choice, make sure you are aware of your surroundings. Make sure the space by your entryway is open so nobody can ambush you from behind a bush or wall. Carry some form of protection with you like pepper spray or an alarm. Also make sure you are aware of your surroundings when driving to and from your destination. Chances are nobody will follow you home, but it is better to be a little paranoid than to put yourself at risk.

You can also make your residence a more secure area. Take some time to look around your place. Try to think like a criminal and come up with ways you could enter the space without too much trouble. The goal of a criminal is to enter a space without being detected. If there are areas near your front and rear entrances that are isolated, someone could take their time breaking in and not be noticed by anyone. Determine the easiest way into your apartment and figure out a way to upgrade the security in this area. Ground level sliding glass patio doors are often an easy access point. Secure the door with a drop bar that will prevent the door from opening from the outside.

Try not to tempt anyone with a reason to risk breaking into your space. Some people are petty criminals and they are willing to risk their freedom to enter a person's home for just about any reason. Other people would not even consider it unless they saw something that offers temptation. If you have a lot of high-end electronics, you need to keep them away from windows. Anything of value needs to be kept in a place in your home that is not seen by outsiders.

Finally, consider installing an alarm system. These can be temporary or permanent. You can speak with your landlord about upgrading security and he or she might be willing to install an alarm for everyone. If you have had experience with a break in, the likelihood is higher the landlord will cooperate. If your landlord is unwilling to take care of the problem, you can install temporary security systems yourself. Even inexpensive alarms that sound when a door is open might be enough to chase away a burglar. Drawing attention to their unauthorized entry is a great way to reduce your risk.
