Imperative Boat Insurance

By: Donald Arnissane Home | Finance | Insurance

It's imperative to think about boat insurance. You wouldn't even consider driving your car without insurance, but people don't really think about insuring their boats in the same manner. Boats, like cars, are both bulky and costly. Quite often, you will need to operate your boat in crowded waterways, and you will very likely have a number of guests on board. Boat insurance allows you to enjoy yourself and know you are protected if something goes wrong. Aside from maintenance, boat insurance is the best investment you will have in your new hobby.

Boat insurance is a lot like insurance for your vehicle. There will be coverage for physical damage to the boat from a variety of causes provided by the basic policy. You may also be covered for vandalism, natural acts of damage, or defects if you add them to your policy. They often will insure your boat trailer at no additional costs, but double check your insurance policy before assuming this.

Medical expenses of you and your guests will be covered in the event of an unforeseen accident. This is the case regardless of whether the incident happens in the water or while getting on or off the boat while it is docked. Coverage limits will vary depending on the policy, just like policies for automobile insurance. Make sure you have the right policy in place, because you never know when an accident will take place.

Boat insurance has some very specific requirements. It's important to learn your insurer's policies regarding these conditions. The possibility that the boat might be grounded is one of the biggest worries. There are a number of ways to handle this issue depending on the policies and procedures of your insurance company. You could end up doing further damage to your boat by having it towed out or it could end up totaled, further complicating the matter. Something else you must keep in mind is the removal of your vessel. If your boat is a total loss, it's still your responsibility to have it removed from the water. Certain insurance companies will offer this coverage but others do not. Make sure towing is covered, considering that the Coast Guard does not provide it for free any longer.

In the event that your vessel exceeds 40 feet or can be classified as a classic, you should consider yacht insurance. There is a higher cost for yacht insurance in comparison to regular insurance for a boat. This insurance, though, has the wants and needs of specifically large vessel owners in mind.

Be sure that the boat insurance you choose is the one that will truly meet your needs and your lifestyle. The cost of the boat along with the cost of insurance can be expensive, but you will have peace of mind knowing you are fully insured.
