In a state that recently has been best known for hurricanes destroying it, it is important for Louisiana residents to understand the importance of having a game plan should a hurricane strike their area again. A great resource is an evacuation plan. Part of an evacuation plan includes understanding the locations of shelters and other resources along the evacuation route. It is also important to know about openings in the shelters along the route. It would be horrible to think there was an opening for your family at a shelter only to find that the shelter you planned to use is full. Another important resource in a hurricane game plan is a emergency preparedness kit. Items in this kit should include a flashlight including extra batteries, at least three gallons of water for each person, a first aid kit, a map of your evacuation plan, protective clothing including raingear, food that does not have to be cooked including peanut butter and crackers, and keys to locations you might go in an emergency. Some of these resources will be essential if you are stuck in your home for an extended period of time. Other items will be helpful not only if you are stuck in your home for an extended period of time but also if you have to leave your home in a hurry. Food and water will be essential resources should your family have to evacuate in a hurry. As part of your emergency preparedness kit, you should also include a portable waterproof container which will include important documents. Some of these important documents should include a driver\'s license or other personal identification, social security cards, proof of residents (deed or lease), insurance policies, and other important documents. Some of these, such as a driver\'s license, will not be able to be stored in the container all the time, but they should be somewhere where they can quickly be transferred to this container in case of an emergency evacuation. When preparing an evacuation plan, make sure all members of the family are aware of the plan. The plan should include where your family will go if you have to evacuate. A back-up location is important in case the original plan does not work. Knowing the phone numbers for these locations is also important. Having children memorize the numbers incase your family is separated is also important. Another important resource is a map. This map should be part of your emergency preparedness kit, and it should be detailed enough that your family can use an alternate or unfamiliar route if major roads are clogged or closed. Battery-powered radios with extra batteries can also be an important resource for people in Louisiana if there is a hurricane warning. This resource can help your family know if they need to evacuate the area. It can also help your family learn more news about what is going in the area once the hurricane has hit. This resource can be important if electricity goes out in the area, because your family can still get emergency information. One of the most important things to remember, though, is that when there is an evacuation warning, it is time to leave. Don\'t worry about your house or your valuable. Those can be replaced. Human lives, though, cannot be replaced.
