In Security Cameras: Optical Zoom Or Digital Zoom?

By: Lee Mark Home | Computers-and-Technology

So, you have made up your mind to get security cameras for your workplace or business. And, you are spending maximum time on browsing through various security cameras available on the market shelves. Some of these cams don’t fit your budget and some are not aesthetically complementing your decor; however, there is another set that perfectly meets your needs.

Now, you will move on to checking the various features that these security gadgets have to offer. One of the security cameras say that it is equipped with 12x optical zoom and another boast of 18x digital zoom. This is quite puzzling. Isn’t it?

People who are not much aware consider the units 12x and 18x as the deciding factor. And, they might not even care much as long as there’s the word zoom in it! However, there are a lot many people who would really want to seek the real difference between digital and optical variations, and then decide.

Before going any further with these concepts, let’s talk a bit about the relevance of zoom in the very first place. Well, the crux is that the zoom feature in a surveillance camera does make a huge difference. A good capability lens can record first-rate video footage in comparison to its competition. But, when it comes to the need of intricate details, zoom is what matters the most because a blurry footage cannot perform its duty accurately. So, it is important to choose wisely.

Let us start with the basic concepts:

Brief about optical zoom

A simple explanation for optical zoom is that it manipulates the hardware to zoom in and zoom out. A camera with optical zoom adjusts its lenses in order to move closer to (or far off) the object. Thus, the optical zoom is the actual zoom, which is achieved using optics i.e the lenses.

Brief about digital zoom

Basically, the concept of digital zoom is that it uses software to take a central portion of the image and enlarge it, thus pretending like optical zoom. In other words, the camera crops a portion of the image and then expands it.

Digital vs Optical Zoom

Many are often caught in the dilemma of what to choose? But, don’t be as these two are pretty much different. The more you zoom in on a camera that uses digital version; the lower will be the quality of the picture produced. The reason behind is that it doesn’t really zoom in on an object, but instead, it simply enlarges the picture.

Talking about optical zoom, it produces a clearer zoomed image. So, if you compare a 12x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom, the output of the optical zoom will come out to be far better.

Which one is better?

By far, it is understandable that optical zoom is superior to digital zoom in many aspects. The digital zoom generally loses image quality as it is similar to cropping the original image at large. But then, the devices using digital zoom are less expensive as compared to the ones using their optical counterparts.

Thus, it can be concluded that whether to choose optical or digital zoom, just choose wisely and as per your needs.
