Indoor Air Purifiers: What To Look For And Benefits Of Ultraviolet Air Cleaners

By: Hillary Lane Home |

Various pollutants and toxins surround us daily; thus, increasing our susceptibility for illnesses. Most people are aware of the risks of outdoor air pollutants from car exhaust, city smog, and factory waste. However, we often underestimate the toxins that are found inside our homes and the buildings we work in on a daily basis.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air found in the largest and most industrialized cities is cleaner than that found in the typical home. On average, indoor air pollutants are two to five times stronger than outdoor pollution. Although this may not sound like much, the risk can sometimes be 100 times higher!

With the average person spending 90% or more of their time indoors, they are increasingly susceptible to viruses, bacteria, molds, and fungi resulting in illness or allergy. With the increasing risk to terrorism and the threat of biological warfare, the eradication of airborne pathogens is critical to our well-being. For this reason, it is recommended that indoor ultraviolet (UV) air purifiers be used to ensure a safe and clean indoor environment. The following paragraphs will explain what to look for and the benefits of ultraviolet air probe sanitizers/cleaners.

The first thing to look for when choosing an air cleaner/purifier is the size of the area that needs purification. This can vary widely from commercial sites, residential areas that would serve as a whole house air purifier or small units that are ideal for motel rooms or small apartments.

Another important factor when choosing a home or commercial air purifier is whether it emits negative ions. These are helpful ions that can be used to prevent and treat illnesses and improve overall health. Research also indicates that negative ions in high proportion will leave you feeling lively, uplifted, and enthusiastic because of the effect they have on a person's metabolism and as a means of enhancing human behavior. In addition, negative ions bring about hormone and biochemical reactions in the body and brain to wash away the toxins that we come in contact with on a daily basis. Because negative ions are able to reverse the effects of positive ions by speeding up the oxidation of serotonin, it makes sense to stay in contact with negative ions as much as possible. The most effective use of negative ions is when they are circulated out of your cooling and heating vents and into your living space by your central air conditioner's fan or blower.

The third thing to consider before buying an air purifier is whether it uses ultraviolet rays. This is important because a central UV air purifier cleans, freshens, and sterilizes the air in an entire house or building using UV light. Short wave (UV-C) kills or de-activates bacteria, viruses and other primitive organisms, even if the organisms have become immune to other disinfection methods.

The benefits of ultraviolet air purifiers include:
Stopping mold, bacteria growth, and odor inside the central air conditioning system, and eliminating the need to clean the mold off the cooling coil (evaporator coil).
Disinfecting the air by killing germs, bacteria, viruses, mildew, mold spores (such as stachybotrys, black mold, etc.) as they circulate through the clean air purifier system and past the UV lamps. This prevents germs, bacteria, and allergens from being blown into the room, where they can be inhaled and cause sinus infections, sickness, and allergies.
Helping stop the spread of diseases and sicknesses.
Freshening and cleaning the air in your rooms while producing zero ozone.
Destroying VOC's (volatile organic compounds).
Keeping your ductwork clean and dust-free inside, thus eliminating the need for periodic duct cleaning.
Generating safe and highly effective hydroxyl, the natural compound that scrubs pollution from the earth's atmosphere. Hydroxyls and hydroxyl radicals are formed when the UV-C strips hydrogen atoms from water molecules (H20) forming hydroxyl (OH)-.
