Industrial Waste Solidification & The Benefits Of Using Absorbent Polymers For It

By: Quint Barefoot Home | Business

People all over the world are realizing the importance of environment conservation. This has resulted in growing pressure on different industries to show their commitment to environmental cause. Industrial waste solidification is one of the many ways that can help protect our environment. Many industries should effectively dispose of liquid waste by using a liquid waste solidifier.

Liquid waste solidification is effectively done by the use of water absorbent polymers, also known as super absorbent polymers. They are basically synthetic polymers with water retention properties. They help in waste solidification by hydrating and becoming a transparent gel after coming in contact with wastes containing aqueous matter. Each particle, however, remains separate and can absorb water up to 300 -500 times its weight. Unlike a sponge that retains its size even after absorbing water, absorbent polymers swell and shrink as they hydrate and dehydrate. They thus function as water reservoirs. The absorption capacity is variable depending on the quality of water in the liquid waste.

Absorbent polymers work well with almost all waste streams that have an aqueous component. Although petroleum and water sludge can be treated using them, very high concentrations of petroleum may slightly impact their performance and hence may require additional reagents.

Waste solidification has to pass several legal and administrative tests such as the Paint Filter Liquids Test before they can be placed in the permitted landfills. Super absorbent polymers ensure that the industrial solidified waste passes this test.

The stability of the polymer to bacterial degradation is variable, depending on a number of factors. In aerobic condition, little degradation is observed and the polymer may be expected to function well for at least five years. In anaerobic conditions, the polymer can be broken down by the ferrous ions created by the action of sulphate reducing bacteria. This means, super absorbent polymers do not constitute a persistent, non-degradable man-made polymer. The belief that absorbent polymers may themselves be a threat to the environment as they are non-biodegradable is false.

If you are looking for a cost effective method of industrial waste solidification, there can be nothing better than the super absorbent polymer 'ZapZorb', developed by one of the leading companies in the field of industrial and medical products, Zappa Tec. It is a very effective liquid waste solidifier & can absorb fluid wastes up to 300 times of its own weight. The best thing about its use is limited increase in weight of the solidified mass, resulting in minimum transportation and disposal costs.
