You will be given a local or general anaesthetic depending on the type of procedure to be carried out and amount of work involved The whole procedure can take one or two hours. After the procedure the nose and eyes will be bruised and swollen, this is painful to begin with and will take a few weeks to settle down. Gauze is used on the inside of the nose so you will not be able to breathe through your nose. The breathing will have to done with your mouth which can be uncomfortable for some. The outside bandages will have to be changed on a regularly basis and if bleeding occurs you should let your surgeon know. It will be necessary to take at least two weeks off work, perhaps even more if possible. Sports and other physical activities are out. The pain can last for quite a while although the swelling and bruising will eventually disappear. Some people might experience side effects like a stuffy nose and a slight numbness. Just take it very easy and slow for the first couple of months and don’t do anything too physical that could cause bleeding or pain. Rhinoplasty has been around for thousands of years and is not a new procedure at all.
