Insurance Is Necessary Safety Net

By: webmaster Eoin Finn Home | Health-and-Fitness

As a professional massage therapist or bodyworker, you are a part of the business world. This may be tough to remember, especially when most of your focus is on helping and healing each client through your hands on knowledge and presence. However, the fact that you exchange services for money makes your work as a massage therapist or bodyworker a business. Therefore, it is important to practice the basic principles of good business right along with your wellness based work.

One of these very basic principles is the need to create a professional atmosphere at your place of business. For massage therapists and bodyworkers, this does not mean fluorescent lights and cubicles. It usually means a serene, clean and safe setting for your clients to come to in order to relax and receive the benefits of massage therapy or bodywork.

Most likely, keeping your practice space serene and clean comes quite naturally, or seems like an obvious necessity for doing business. When it comes to safety, though, it can be a bit more tricky to know how to cover this key base of business from every angle. After all, the term safety, when it comes to running a massage therapy or bodywork business, can mean many things.

There is safety within the session room, which usually applies to staying well within your scope of practice during each appointment, doing a thorough intake form with every new client, and making sure to stay aware of any issues that may arise with existing clients. This way, you can be certain to select products and techniques that will not be contraindicated for any of your clients.

Another aspect of safety inside the session room corresponds to the equipment, products and other items you use during massage therapy or bodywork appointments. For example, your massage table must be sturdy and of high quality and you must keep an eye on any candles you have lit in order to maintain a safe environment. These are but a few examples of safety issues that should be kept in check at all times.

Beyond the actual session room of your practice space, there are the hallways, bathrooms, possibly a waiting or reception area, and the surrounding outdoor property. When it comes to these spots, safety is mostly about preventing slips, trips or falls. Secure any loose rugs, clean up wet floors as quickly as possible, keep obstacles out of the walkways, and make sure to clear any ice or other potential hazard from the property outside your practice.

As you can see, keeping your massage therapy or bodywork practice consistently safe is a large, but necessary, part of running a business. Even if you are meticulous about all of the above suggestions and more, there still can be unexpected occurrences. This is why the other basic principle of business safety is enrolling in a strong liability insurance program.

Massage therapy liability insurance will be there to provide coverage and protection in case something does happen at your place of business. Whether it is a client tripping over crack in your sidewalk or claiming a severe allergic reaction to the lubricant used during the session, massage therapy liability insurance will be there to back you up.
