Integrating Promotional Items Into Your Product Line

By: Gareth Parkin Home |

Can you really sell products with your name on them? Promotional items and gifts are usually thought of as giveaways for trade shows, conferences, training seminars and advertising campaigns but more and more often, promotional items are becoming the product.

If you've got a good brand name, why not utilise this and make money on it? That's the thinking behind selling your own promotional items as part of your product line. In order for this strategy to work, though, you need to ensure that you meet a few key criteria.

1.Do you have a good product?
We're talking about the promotional item itself here. Unless you're a major brand or have a well-known name, you'll need to concentrate some time and effort into creating a marketable product that people will actually want to own.

2.Is there a good reason that people will want to remember your business?
Some of the most compatible businesses for this kind of strategy are restaurants, pubs, B&Bs and other holiday destinations, clubs and organisations and schools and universities. If your business or organisation is one that has a strong membership, then it's a natural thing for selling its own promotional items and advertising gifts.

3.Can you sell enough to make it profitable?
In order to sell enough products to make it profitable for you to invest, you need to consider a few things: can you get the promotional items at a bulk or inexpensive rate? Can you afford to make the investment up front? Do you have enough of a market for your promotional items to recoup your initial investment? Remember, every promotional item that you sell will pay off in advertising for your business or organisation. Breaking even on sales is a good goal making a profit is even better and is obviously the preferred result for any business or organisations marketing strategy.

4.Can you find a good supplier?
The answer to that question is an unqualified yes but it does pay to do your research. There are dozens of companies that supply promotional items to schools, organisations, clubs and businesses. Find one that delivers a quality product on time and at your budget rate and you can then site back and relax watching the results come in from your hard work.

What sort of promotional items can you sell?
There are two classes of promotional items that you can sell generic promotional products that will work for any business or organization, and promotional items that suit particular industry and organisation types. Generic products are those that aren't associated with any particular business, and can be personalized easily to suit your organization. These include:

-apparel with your organization or company name on it
-coffee mugs and travel mugs
-pens and pencils
-calendars and planners
-note pads and conference folders
-golf umbrellas
-gadgets like fans and stress toys
-water bottles
-tote and cotton bags

Some of the more specialised items might include:

-golf tees
-workout and yoga mats
-mouse mats
-desktop items, clocks, calculators etc.
-electronics items
