Internet Service Without Phone Line Is Becoming Increasingly Popular

By: Malcolm Nguyen Home | Communications

As many consumers decide to skip having a traditional landline phone connection in lieu of using their cell phone for all telephony, the question of how do I get Internet service without phone line is heard more and more often. While technology continues to advance, there are already a number of options already available if you decide to go this way.

Once of the most widespread methods of getting Internet when you don’t have a landline is using your cable connection. This method is popular because it not only allows you to skip the landline and get Internet but it enables you to use your Internet for telephony through VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). This technology has been readily available for quite some time. Of course, you will still be wired. But you will have access to all the features of the Internet and you will be using time tested technology. The only requirement is a cable modem and a cable connection. Plans in every area vary but most plans will run between $30 and $50 per month.

If you are a satellite subscriber rather than a subscriber to traditional cable services, you may be able to add Internet service without phone line to your satellite connection. This works much the same way as cable and the rates are generally along the same lines as well. Providers such as DirectTV and Dish Network offer this type of service and will normally offer a bundled package in order to reduce costs.

Another option which has received increased attention recently is DSL. DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is a commonly available type of high speed Internet access. It is nothing new but until recently most providers required that subscribers have a traditional telephone line before they could install DSL. That doesn’t mean that your Internet connection will be with a wired connection. You will be receiving Internet with phone line but you will see need to have a wired connection. The provider will install the line but it will be dedicated to Internet rather than for phone connectivity. DSL for Internet is sometimes referred to as Dry Loop.

The DSL for Internet without phone service arena has actually heated up and you can turn to third party companies as well as your traditional telephone company. When shopping â€buyer beware.†Introductory pricing is generally aggressive and cheap. These prices do expire and regular monthly pricing is normally in the same range as cable and satellite options.

What about wireless? Options for wireless connectivity to allow Internet with phone line is still developing. Some municipalities do offer Wi-Fi (wireless satellite transmission) and you may live close enough to a Wi-Fi hub that you can skip the subscription process completely. Thanks to the world financial crisis free Wi-Fi has lost significant ground as cities struggle to pay for basic services rather than spend large amounts on opening up Internet with phone lines to their citizens.

While consumer’s best bet for getting Internet service without adding a traditional phone line is to use cable, satellite, or DSL there will be new options in the future. The point is, you can get Internet with phone line if that is the way you want to go.
