When one Jewish Rabbi started the concept of speed dating to help Jewish people meet potential partners faster, he might not have imagined that he had revolutionized dating itself. Internet speed dating has made this dating concept more convenient and faster, and helped it grow to levels that could never have been imagined. Just what is speed dating? Simply put, it is a method for meeting as many potential compatible partners as possible within a relatively short period of time. How does it work? Using a live event as an example, it starts with an equal number of men and women meeting at predetermined place. It could be a hall, hotel or even bar, though alcohol consumption is often not allowed for obvious reasons. Each couple is given a few minutes, usually 8 minutes which gives this dating method its other name; the 8 minute date. When the allotted time is up, the couples rotate, each one moving to a different person. They keep doing this until each one has met all the individuals from the opposite sex. For those who are gay or lesbian, don't feel left out, there are events for same sex speed dating too. The idea here is threefold; 1) you get to meet as many potential partners as possible, 2) you get to meet them in a speedy manner and 3) there is less time to get "attached" to any one of them. Once the full cycle is complete, each person writes down the names of persons they would like to leave their contact information to. If there is a match, contact information is forwarded to each party. The matching is often done after the event to avoid rejection and embarrassment. There are several advantages of internet speed dating over the traditional method of attending an event. The biggest advantage is convenience. You do not have to travel to an event that may be several hundred miles from where you live. You can "speed date" from the comfort of your own home. Another advantage of internet speed dating is that you are not limited to a certain number of participants; there are singles from near and far, from all over the country and the world. This also eliminates another problem with live events; cancellation. This has been known to happen, especially when the organizers are experienced. There is also the likelihood of one person not showing up to at a live event, even without malice or any fault of their own. This could upset the whole balance of the event as you now have more singles of one gender. Internet speed dating also eliminates certain aspects of internet dating that many people find uncomfortable such as writing dating profiles and answering long questionnaires, not to mention sending endless emails and instant messages.
