Iphone Skins Protect Your Apple Investment From Accidental Scratches

By: Daniel Marcus Manson Home | Communications | Mobile

Michele wrote in last week to point out that she broke a fingernail on her Blackberry Pearl. â€Those little buttons are lame when it comes to texting,†she says. â€Not only are they small, but you have to use a lot of force. A perfect recipe for a nail disaster and that’s exactly what happened to me; right after a manicure no less.â€

That’s unfortunate. No one deserves to wreck a manicure that way. But Michele can take some solace in the fact that her keyboard should loosen up with use. She doesn’t say in her e-mail, but I’m guessing that her Pearl is relatively new.

Michele does bring up an interesting issue, though. Guys don’t have to worry about this kind of thing. Hell, most of them don’t even care what color their phone is. Girls, however, have a definite issue when it comes to fingernails. Physical buttons can be a nuisance. Some people prefer the tactile feedback they offer, but heavy texters complain of fatigue and there’s always that nail-damaging potential. In which case, there’s the virtual keyboard, as popularized by the iPhone. But what about those glamorous, long nails? Do they interfere with typing on a virtual keyboard? Here’s the rub. The iPhone’s screen does not recognize a fingernail, so you have to type with the tips of your fingers. If you can manage that, you’re golden. If you’re concerned that those talons might scratch the screen, go with a skin to protect the iPhone- they come in range of colors and patterns and don’t interfere with functionality while they protect your investment.

What about other phones with virtual keyboards? The iPhone is obviously the Big Kahuna when it comes to these things, but there are other manufacturers offering touch screen cell phones. If you’re into BlackBerry, there is the BlackBerry Storm. It’s kind of plain and business looking, but if you’re in to that kind of thing, it might be an option for you. Samsung has a pair of lookers getting decent reviews: the Omnia and Instinct. Unfortunately, both of these phones run the Windows Mobile operating system and I’m not a huge fan of that OS.

Here’s my final advice on this issue. Go to your cell retailer and try â€em all out. You’ll drive the sales staff crazy, but if you’re dropping 500 bones or more on one of these things, you’d better be able to actually use it.
