Is Large Volume Liposuction Safe?

By: Katy Flanagan Home | Health-and-Fitness

Large Volume Liposuction Defined

Large volume liposuction is considered to be a drastic form of fat removal surgery. Although many people desire its results, it's extremely important to talk to your cosmetic surgeon about the safety of this procedure.

There really is no standard definition for large volume liposuction. It can vary from one surgeon to the next. However, a common definition is that it is a liposuction procedure that involves removing more than 5 liters of fat, blood, and other substances from the body.

With the "look like a movie star" and "get thin quick" mentality increasing, as well as the rate of obesity, it's no wonder more and more people are looking into large volume liposuction. With the ability to drop a couple dress sizes without dieting and exercising, it's a dream come true for some.

Risks of Large Volume Liposuction

Whether or not it is truly safe continues to be argued among experts. Some state matter-of-factly that large volume liposuction is a safe and ideal way to provide people with a slim body; others claim it is very dangerous and should not be offered as a fat removal surgery option. But there are those who say that it is possible to safely perform such a procedure, yet make note of the potential risks and concerns involved.

Any surgeon can perform cosmetic surgery. However, this does not mean they have the necessary training, skills, or experience to perform such cosmetic procedures, including liposuction. This can be dangerous to patients, especially those seeking to this type of fat removal surgery. Because this particular procedure involves removing a lot more of a person's body tissue and fluid, the procedure can be a lot more traumatic and more than a person's body can handle. Even in the hands of a qualified, board-certified cosmetic surgeon with years of experience, large volume liposuction is considered to be a much riskier procedure than other forms of lipo.

Selecting a Cosmetic Surgeon

If you are considering having large volume liposuction performed on your body, it's important you be even more selective when it comes to choosing a cosmetic surgeon than normal. Inquire about the surgeon's experience, skills, qualifications, experience, and results achieved. Also find out exactly how many large volume lipo procedures the surgeon has performed. Don't hesitate to ask the surgeon about complications he or she has experienced with this type of procedure. You can also do a search on the internet to find out if there is any bad press about the surgeon from other patients.

When it comes to large volume liposuction, do everything possible to find out as many details as possible about the procedure and the surgeon you end up considering to perform it. With this particular form of liposuction carrying with it potentially higher risks, you'll want to make sure you put your body and your life in only the best of hands.
