Is My Silver Jewelry Real? How To Check!

By: temp Home | Health-and-Fitness | Beauty

This is perhaps one of the biggest issues for people that own jewelry, simply because a lot of people go around looking for jewelry to purchase at discount prices. A lot of people are a lot of the time more interested in how much a particular piece of jewelry might cost rather than ascertaining its actual value and therefore a lot of people will buy what they think is silver jewelry only to find out later on down the road that what they thought was silver jewelry really turned out to be something else. Well, there are a few ways that you can check for true silver jewelry and you can use one of these ways depending on where you happen to be.

In order to start this discussion, let us assume you are at a sale and are interested in finding out exactly whether that amazingly cheaply sold piece of jewelry is actually made of silver. Well, if you happen to be wearing foundation at the time, then all you have to do is rub the silver jewelry piece across your cheek. If the silver is real, then what will happen is that it will leave a temporary black mark across your cheek. If it isn't real silver then the mark will not appear. Incidentally enough, this also works for gold so if you are at a garage sale and need to find out right away, use this test to do so.

If the type of silver that you are dealing with is specifically sterling silver, then in many places of the world what you are going to find is that the silver itself can not be sold as sterling silver unless there is a .925 marked somewhere on the jewelry piece. So, if you are interested in finding out whether you are dealing with real sterling silver, take a look around your jewelry piece and see if you can find this hallmark. It will be on a piece of the jewelry that is not likely to be noticed during regular wearing and if you can't find this hallmark then you'll know that the piece is not sterling silver.

A little further to that point however, most silver products should have some sort of marking on them along those same lines. What that marking does is illustrate exactly what the silver content of the piece is. For example, the marking .925 illustrates that sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver; other types of silver might have smaller amounts of real silver in them and ultimately you will have to make the decision as to whether the amount of silver contained in the jewelry piece is enough for you. Usually, the marking is too small to read with the naked eye so if you suspect that you might need to make a close inspection of the jewelry, then bring a magnifying glass with you to the sale. Then you can find out from the jewelry piece itself exactly what the pure silver content is.
