Jobs In Peterbourgh Are Plentiful Thanks To Redevelopment

By: Dominic Donaldson Home | Business | Careers-Employment

Peterborough is situated in Cambridgeshire in the east of England and historically has been associated with an industrial workforce. Like the rest of the country however, there has been a shift from industrial employment to jobs in the service industry, tourism and finance. Peterborough is often associated with last minute trips to the passport office for those that live in the east or as a stopping point for rail services between London and York. In fact, it was the introduction of this railway line that saw the employment levels rise in Peterborough through the production and distribution of bricks made from local clay deposits.

The brick making industry from this part of the country has influenced the surrounding architecture and transformed the small market town into an industrial centre. A prominent diesel engine manufacturer also based themselves in Peterborough and was responsible for employing a large proportion of Peterborians, and to add to the employment triumphs, the opening of a sugar processing plant gave the town a reputation for low unemployment levels. Unfortunately, these industries have seen a rapid decline as this type of employment has decreased across the country.

However, the reputation for gainful employment holds to this day and as such attracts many workers to the area. In fact, Peterborough opted to take in a large number of immigrants from the Baltic States, provide jobs and housing and create new developments to boost the economy. Proposals to re build the city centre have provided estimates of the rate of future employment levels. The new developments proposed have a potential of creating nearly 18000 new employment opportunities. These changes have attracted new businesses to the area, creating yet more jobs in Peterborough. Tesco and Debenhams amongst others have relocated a large proportion of their business to the new developments.

The close proximity to London makes the area a favourable commuter town. With just a 45 minute train journey to the capital, the opportunity for employment covers a large area. An average of 15 thousand Peterborians commute to London to work, but a further 31 thousand commute into Peterborough to make up around one third of the total workforce in the city. Peterborough is also a popular destination for tourists offering a wealth of historical buildings and arts events to visit. The employment within the tourist industry has been on the increase, a trend that is reflected once again across the whole of the country.

The volume of jobs available has created a thriving recruitment workforce in itself. The High Street boasts some 20 recruitment agencies to cope with the demand for temporary staff across many industries. Although the area can boast a high level of employment, it cannot do the same for the rates of pay. The average wage calculates at just under 10 GBP per hour, whereas the countrywide average is nearer to 12 GBP per hour. The economic growth however is exceeding the average in the rest of the country, and this once small market town is experiencing a boost in its economy.

For a person considering applying for Jobs in Peterborough, it is wise to research the employment sectors that are seeking to recruit. Relocation could aid the search for permanent employment, and the availability of short term contracts in the service industry should make a trip to the unemployment centre unnecessary.
