Keeping Your Immune System Healthy - 3 Tips

By: Grant Eckert Home | Health-and-Fitness | Nutrition

When every day it seems that a new virus is out to attack you, it's no wonder that people are looking for smart ways to improve their immune system. Our body's natural defense system was designed to handle even the scariest of infections - but only if we treat it right. Here are three tips that you can use to make sure your bug-fighting body can fend off the latest course of what's going around your office or house.

The way the body's immune system works will help you see better what you need to do to keep it up and running. When you have an infection in your body, the immune system springs into action by making white blood cells and other antibodies that will fight off the infection. If the immune system is healthy itself, this process will be quick and you probably won't even know that you were infected in the first place. But when you aren't taking care of your body, your immune system's response time goes down, causing the infection to outnumber the antibodies it is making - and then you become ill.

To properly bolster your immune system, you need to start by getting enough sleep. Sleep is the restorative time for the body, when your body gets to repair damage you did during the day and a chance to rest up and conserve its energy. The average adult needs about seven to eight hours of sleep each night, according to most experts. However, if you feel rested and rejuvenated on less, that's fine too. The best test is to see if you are able to wake up in the morning without an alarm clock (or snooze bar, for that matter). If you can wake up without a problem, you're probably getting enough sleep. If not, you need to try to get to bed a bit earlier.

The next tip that you will want to keep in mind to strengthen your immune system is proper nutrition. When you're fueling your body appropriately, your immune system will be able to respond better to infections. This is because your body will have enough energy and the right nutrients that will allow you to stay healthy. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet that contains each of the main food groups - meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and grains. You will want to avoid sugars and fats as much as you can, as these can weigh your body down and weaken your immune system. Drinking a lot of water can also help to speed up your digestion and create a healthy balance in your body.

The final tip for keeping your immune system healthy includes trying supplements. There are a number of different products available that can help to bolster your immune system - Echinacea, Goldenseal, vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics are just a few. While many of these are not proven to work for your immune system, they all help to increase the strength of your body, which can help you fight off illness more easily. And some people will also begin to think that they will be healthier because they're taking these kinds of supplements, thus they are healthier. There's nothing wrong with this placebo effect if it works, right?

Your immune system is your line of defense against colds, flus, and other infections. By taking the time to take care of your body, you can have more healthy days to enjoy. Remember: sleep, eat well, and try supplements in order to keep your immune system ready for whatever your life throws your way.
