â€The Lion King’ which continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre is truly a phenomenon. When the film version was released by Disney, they were delighted as it marked a resurgence in their fortunes. It combined many of the things for which Disney is renowned with exciting storytelling and great tunes. Disney then did the unthinkable. They decided to do a stage musical based on the film. How could they possibly make the animals as believable as in a cartoon? They surpassed even their own most ambitious dreams and â€The Lion King’ is now one of the most successful stage musicals ever with Lion King tickets at a premium. In fact Disney is now one of the world’s top producers of musical theatre and there have been many other attempts to produce stage versions of films with varying degrees of success. â€The Shawshank Redemption’ regularly features in the ubiquitous lists of the greatest ever films. However, the stage version did not last long in the West End even though the producers used quotes about the film and seemed to be passing these off as referring to the stage show. A far more successful transition from film to stage is â€Legally Blonde’ which continues its record breaking run at the Savoy theatre. Similarly tickets for â€Billy Elliot’, â€Sister Act’, â€Dirty Dancing’ and â€Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ continue to sell well. Opening at the Shaftesbury Theatre in September is â€Flashdance the Musical’. It will be interesting to see if this show becomes an addition to the list of hits or the list of flops.
