Know About Dietary Supplements

By: Scott Gillespie Home | Health-and-Fitness

To maintain the good health and body people are working much on their body and physique. In this context dietary supplements can be very helpful in keeping the body in healthy condition and hence making lifestyle active. So if you consider your health at the highest propriety then go for the selection of right supplements which could boost up your body.

Dietary supplements can be taken in the form of pills, powders, capsules and liquids. Sometimes these supplements play a very important role in different types of health problem. The supplement of vitamin folic acid is very much important for the pregnant women. It helps in the growth of the baby and also it prevents some birth defects if there is any. A regime of Zinc and Vitamins is very much essential in body. It also helps in lowering the progression of the eye disease and 'age-related macular degeneration'.

Though the exact preparation guidelines of a certain nutritional and dietary supplement may not be written in the package, the manufacturers are obliged by law to inform consumers how they make their products. The sanitation of factories or sites where these supplements are made can greatly affect their quality and potency.

Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant and essential mineral of the human body. Some 99% of the calcium present in the body can be found in the bones and teeth (as it is the primary ingredient needed to form bones and teeth). Other important functions of this top dietary supplement include blood clotting, transmission of nerve cell signals, and muscle contraction.

As an essential mineral, iron contains hemoglobin that carries oxygen through the blood as well as myoglobin that helps muscles to store oxygen. They are important in keeping oxygen circulated and used throughout the body.

These substances can be found in food sources. Most of the Vitamin C we need comes from foods like fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is an oil that can be found in vegetable oils, nuts, avocadoes, and whole grains. Beta-carotene can be found in green vegetables like broccoli, orange and red veggies like carrots, tomatoes, and peppers. Selenium is a mineral not found directly in the food we eat but in the soil where the food grows. The selenium in plants is directly related to the amount in the soil. For other sources, try foods like chicken, seafood, and nuts.

There are quite a few other drugs that professional herbalists believe can help with depression. Keep in mind that if you are visiting a professional herbalist you should listen carefully to his recommendations and even write them down. It is too easy to forget or make a mistake if you don’t. So, keep a paper and pen handy. The other drugs include Damiana, Valerian root, ginseng, and others. Each of these herbs has its own special effect on the body and on depression.

Many of the medicinal claims for herbs and other botanicals supplements have not yet been fully studied or research to substantiate effectiveness and safety. Precautions of dietary supplements in the form of herbs and botanicals should be taken especially when under medication, experiencing a serious condition, when pregnant, and when under the age of 12. Little is known about some of the ingredients contained in these supplements and they are largely unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration Board. Some of the herbal supplements have showed serious side effects that have caused the FDA to recall products that contain the said ingredients.

Aside from vitamins, most supplements have little to no proven benefit. When choosing supplements, the FDA recommends sticking to those that have been extensively researched, including vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and amino acids. Because they classify dietary supplements as foods, the FDA has little power over what makes it to the market, so its up to you to make smart choices.
