Knowledge For Your Own Good When It Comes To Air Conditioning Compressor

By: Gen Wright Home | Automotive | Cars

It has been said a lot of times that the air conditioning compressor is the most important part of an air conditioner. Because of this, it is quite safe to say that you really have to take care of the compressor since the performance of your air conditioner greatly depends on its condition. To be able to take care of your AC compressor, it is advisable that you also know what the possible problems are that it can experience along the way.

The failing of compressors is caused by one of two things: being used by a long period of time and abusing the use of an air conditioner. It can be said that an air conditioning compressor is abused when one of the following things are done to it: when air conditioner is run when the Freon has not been charged properly; or when an improper service has been done. There are several actions that fall under improper service and they are undercharging, overcharging, removal of thermal limiter, replacing the starter capacitor with a wrong one, combining incompatible types of oil, oil insufficiency, placing the wrong oil, installation of wrong compressor in the system, and installing one without fixing the prior problems of the system.

On the other hand, an AC compressor can fail in different ways; it can be fail shorted, can have bearing failure, fail open, can have a valve failure, and piston failure. In the event that a compressor fails open, this means that a wire inside it was broken. To know that this is the problem, you will notice that you compressor does not function and it hums. Most likely, when this failure happens, the owner already needs to replace it with a new compressor. The only good thing about this type of failure is that it does not affect any other parts when it gets damaged that is why you do not have to worry about spending too much for it. However, if a compressor fails short it means that the insulation on the wires is not working properly anymore. When this happens, an internal burning can happen because the wires inside tend to touch one another. When a failed short happens, the best thing for an owner to do is to just replace the whole thing because nothing can be salvaged out of it - everything is turned into junk. The thing with this type of failure, since you do not exactly know where the shortage started, it is best that when you replace the compressor, you also replace the entire system as well to ensure safety. The failures that can happen rarely to a compressor are the following: valve failure, piston failure, and bearing failure. Usually these three uncommon failures lead to more serious ones like short circuits so it is really important for you to make sure that nothing among these three happens to your compressor.

To be able to truly understand and prevent your self from suffering from different air conditioning compressor failures, it is first best to know more about them. After all, this is the only way by which you will know the best thing to do when you are already in a specific situation.
