The light is absorbed below a few skin layers into the tattoo pigment. The fragmented tattoo pigments are then absorbed by the body and removed from the skin. The wavelength and light pulse are specifically designed to affect tattoo pigments rather than normal pigments, so normal skin isn’t affected by the procedure. Laser tattoo removal may require more than one procedure. In addition, the progress of removal depends on a variety of factors, including the experience of the tattoo artist. The better the artist, the more evenly the tattoo pigment was applied in the first place. If the tattoo pigment has been unevenly applied, then it may require additional procedures to achieve the same look. Additionally, color can also have an effect. Laser tattoo removal may hurt. Many describe it as being snapped by a rubber band. However, cooling devices like fans or creams may reduce the feeling and speed healing. The darker colors fade first, followed by the brighter colors like red, blue and green. The number of treatments will vary depending on the tattoo, but may range from three to six to more treatments to ensure that the pigments will be absorbed by the body.
