Laxative Relief Can Be More Harmful Than Helpful

By: Home | Health-and-Fitness

Getting constipated is something that happens to everyone at any age. Many people understand that you should quickly increase your fiber intake whether from fiber pills or foods that are rich in fiber or drink juices, such as prune juice, although it is advisable to avoid apple juice or any juice that contains bananas, as they can make the situation worse. Using natural items to rid yourself of constipation may take a little longer, but are safer for your body. If you have having problems with constipation, you may feel that it is beneficial to resort to using laxative products that state they are natural and healthy, but it can be more harmful than you might think that they are.

Constipation stems from not eating the proper foods to keep your body moving as it should. This can be caused by lack of proper food or an increase in processed foods in your diet. When using a laxative, you are also taking away the necessities that your body naturally needs in its food. It can lead to other problems also, besides poor nutrition.

Laxatives are habit forming for your body. The digestive system will start relying on the laxatives after you use them for an extended period of time, and cease to function properly. This will cause your constipation to become a chronic problem. Once you begin using laxatives for your constipation, you will find yourself needing more and more of it to keep your body regulated as it used to do on its own. Having a digestive tract that no longer works as it once did can lead to other health issues you may not have been aware of.

You may find that you are prone to more abdominal cramping and muscle spasms. Using laxatives can cause an imbalance of your body's natural electrolytes, which leads to dehydration. With an imbalance of electrolytes, you can experience lung and heart problems, such as irregular heart beats that can result in a number of other problems. If you are female, you may begin to experience frequent yeast infections. You may have daily aches and pains that are uncomfortable and cause you to be unable to perform your daily activities. After a long period of time, you may find that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome which can result in the need for surgery.

It is important to take care of your body and maintain your health in the best possible way. The best way to maintain a healthy digestive system is to avoid all laxatives, even if they promise that they are healthy, natural and will not cause side effects.

If you begin to feel that you are constipated:

Start with eating foods high in fiber.
Eat foods high in carbohydrates.
Eat foods that naturally cause your digestive system to work quickly.
Soak in warm baths.
Try natural constipation relief products.

Be sure to take care of your system and not take products that appear to be a quick fix, as they can cause problems that you are trying to avoid.
