Learn How To Fight Baldness And Demystify Hair Loss Myths

By: Ian Caspar Home | Health-and-Fitness | Men's-Issues

Baldness, caused due to androgenetic alopecia or male pattern hair loss, is a fairly common condition in men. In this condition, men lose hair in a well-defined pattern beginning above both temples. Hair also begins to thin at the crown and the hairline starts to recede backwards. If male pattern hair loss is not checked in time, it can lead to partial or complete baldness.

For centuries, men have battled baldness. They have tried everything from shampoos, oils, herbal concoctions, animal waste and even prayers and worship, but nothing proved helpful. Only recently men have discovered a treatment against male pattern hair loss called Propecia finasteride. This medicine has been approved by the FDA as a prescription only drug for male pattern hair loss in men. By far, Propecia finasteride is proven to be the most effective and convenient treatment for male pattern baldness. The medicine, when taken once a day regularly, not only stops further hair loss but also stimulates the growth of new hair.

The reason for the astounding success of Propecia is that it strikes at the root cause of male pattern baldness which is a result of higher than normal levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in some men. When in excess, DHT shrinks the size of the hair follicle so that the growth of new hair is prevented. Propecia reduces the DHT levels to optimum by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into DHT. As a result, further hair loss is prevented. Millions of men across the world benefit from Propecia to keep their hair loss in check.

Hair loss myths
There are several myths regarding hair loss. Here is an attempt to demystify some of the popular hair loss myths.

Myth: Baldness makes men less virile
Reality: This is a popular myth that comes because the industry continuously perpetuates images of men with hair as tempting, prosperous, strong and powerful; though there is no scientific proof that links baldness and virility. Studies show that bald men are typically less satisfied with their appearance and give the impression to being older than their age.

Myth: Hairs do not come back
Reality: The truth is that hairs can grow again, depending on the cause of baldness. Generally, men suffering from hair loss because of life-stressing events, diseases like cancer or lupus, recent surgery, infection, drug taking or drugs, malnutrition or a too strict diet, do get their hair back when the cause is removed. However, male pattern baldness must be quickly treated. The earlier the hair loss is treated, the better are the chances of success.

Myth: Women do not lose their hair
Reality: Women too lose their hair in the same proportion as men; however, like men women do not become bald completely. Although female baldness can occur as a result of puberty, it is more commonly observed after menopause.

Myth: Nothing can be done against hair loss
Reality: This may have been true until a few years ago, but with the launch of Propecia, it has been proven that hair loss caused due to male pattern baldness can be effectively treated in men.
