As this industry is growing fast and yet people are still skeptical of lending firms being loan sharks or fraudulent, this situation begged for some serious considerations and improvements in the safeguarding of the interests of both the parties the service provider and the client or the borrower. It led to the formation of different laws whose main purpose was to ensure â€Responsible Lendingâ€. This concept took roots as it provided security not only to the client but also shelteredthe lenders interests. It started out in Europe and U.S.A followed, along with Australia and then many other countries. This has brought about fair and honest dealings and has increased trust level of the consumers and hence profiting the industry. Responsible lending has become a part of legislature and hence any violation of this act is considered an offence. This reform mainly protects the consumer. Institutes like Centre of Responsible Lending (CRL)and Americans for fairness in Lending (AFFIL) have been working a long time for the protection of the consumers and now that the law is in place regarding it and a substantial change is witnessed by all. The common guidelines of â€Responsible Lending†in different countries are following: â€The lender would provide standardized explanation to the consumer about the credit program being offered. â€The lender would check creditworthiness before offering or increasing credit. â€The consumer would have the right to withdraw from the agreement within 14 days without giving a reason. â€The consumer would also have the right to make partial early payments. â€The lender is obligated to provide accurate assessment to the client whether the loan is suitable or not or would it be payable for him in light of his financial situation. These reforms were long overdue and are now finally being imposed. They now play a vital part in consumer protection and also have promoted fair dealing among the people on a global scale.
