Live As A Jamaican Maroon Slave: One Of The Many Black History Month Activities

By: Maureen Wright-Evans Home | Travel-and-Leisure

February is Black History Month and Jamaicans are celebrating this historic time all over the world. This year is even more significant as the world just watched Barrack Obama selected as the first black President of the United States.

Black History Month is a very important period all over the world for black people to celebrate and reflect on their history. This is a time to educate their children and people of other races about their culture and the outstanding contributions black people have made to the development of the world.

For Black History Month, while many people will be reading poetry, watching biographies of famous scientists, athletes, civil rights leaders and many other famous blacks, Jamaicans will be hosting African village festivals. Vacation adventurers will come to Jamaica on special packages like the Jamaican African experience and have a chance to live like a maroon for a day.

Various aspects of slavery will be re-enacted with the participation of everyone
living and eating as a Jamaican Maroon slave.

The Maroons were runaway slaves who lived high in the hills of
Jamaica. These fierce warriors fought and defeated the British Redcoat.

Their most famous method of cooking was 'jerking.’ This was popular as it prevented the British from identifying their Villages in the mountains. For Black History Month jerking will be one of the popular foods on the island and one of the favourite worldwide.

One of the most popular aspects of a visit to a Maroon village is the dancing of the
Kumina and can be seen in the celebrations of the Jamaican African experience. Through this dance, Maroons keep the spirit of Africa alive.

See the chanting of the drummer as he calls on the spirit of his ancestors. The hypnotic sound of the drum will toss him on the ground as he crawls and squirms. When the beat echoes in his skull the African heritage lives on

Living for a day as a Jamaican Maroon Slave is one of the very special Black History Month activities Jamaicans and visitors enjoy.
